At ITSector, “patching” is usually associated with technology: identifying what can be improved, finding the right solution and making systems work better. But this time, we took that mindset beyond code and applied it to a challenge with tangible social impact: food waste in a social initiative that we entitled Patch the Waste Week.
In partnership with Refood Portugal, colleagues from our six Development Centres joined local hubs across the country, helping with the day-to-day work of sorting, organising and preparing surplus food for redistribution.
Although the tasks were practical, their purpose was far-reaching. Every product checked, every basket prepared and every package organised helped keep perfectly good food in circulation and bring it closer to the people who could benefit from it.
Just as importantly, a spirit of generosity, commitment and genuine camaraderie ran through every shift. Colleagues from different teams worked towards the same goal, while some locations went a step further by rallying together to collect donations for their local hubs.
Reflecting on the initiative, Pedro Ferreira, Senior Employer Branding Specialist, shared: “Patch the Waste Week showed what can be achieved when people come together around a shared purpose. Every item recovered reflects the combined efforts of volunteers, partners and local organisations - a reminder that meaningful impact often begins with simple, practical action.”
The work does not stop here, and there are many ways to make a difference. Visit Refood Portugal’s official website to learn more about its mission and discover how you can get involved.
