Digital Bridges

ITSector volunteers joined the members of Associação Extragenária for a session on online safety, scams and AI.

Novo Projeto (2)-Nov-05-2026-04-47-10-6614-PMTo mark the International Day of Older Persons on October 1, we partnered with Associação Extragenária to launch the initiative "Digital Bridges". A team of ITSector volunteers ran a session for the association’s members, helping them feel more confident and safer online.

The need is real. According to ANACOM, digital literacy among people over 65 in Portugal falls well behind the European average. When it comes to Artificial Intelligence, the challenge is just as clear: a study by EY found that only 24% of respondents aged 60 to 85 were familiar with the technology. This knowledge gap raises important concerns about digital safety, particularly the risks of online fraud.

Two talks, one afternoon

The first talk focused on online safety and scam prevention. ITSector’s experts explained how to protect devices, accounts and personal data, how to recognise the most common frauds, from suspicious text messages to fake phone calls, and what to do when something doesn't feel right.

The second offered a plain-language introduction to Artificial Intelligence: what it is, where it already shows up in everyday life and how it can be genuinely useful, along with the risks to keep in mind. Rather than lectures, both sessions were built for conversation. Quiz-style questions on the big screen tested what the audience already knew, and participants were encouraged to interrupt, share their own experiences and ask anything.

Colleagues as teachers

The sessions were led by colleagues from different teams, including IT support specialists and an IS Architect, who turned their everyday expertise into simple, practical advice. “Technology only makes sense when it brings people closer. Sharing what we know with those who didn't grow up with these tools is one of the most meaningful ways we can give back, and this afternoon showed there is real appetite to learn at any age,” says Inês Silva, Systems and Infrastructure Coordinator at ITSector.

We thank Associação Extragenária and its members for their warm welcome, and our colleagues for giving their time to make it happen.
